An Outstanding First Impression Through Nonverbal Communication
How quickly do you make opinions about people?
We'd like to think that we don't pass judgement on people until we've gotten to know them. However, it only takes a tenth of a second to form an accurate opinion on someone you meet or see.
This is supported by research. A study done in 2005 by Alex Todorov, a psychologist at Princeton University, and his student research assistant Janine Willis demonstrated this. During the study, participants were invited to watch a brief video of political candidates (less than a second). After then, they were asked to guess who would win the election. What's fascinating is that even with only a brief exposure to video, the participants correctly predicted 70% of the time.
What does this imply? It means that most of us make snap decisions that have long-term consequences.
MAKE THE CONSCIOUS DECISION TO BE ENTHUSIASTIC
People can sense your energy whether you are aware of it or not. People will instantly notice how you're feeling inwardly when you enter any form of engagement, whether it's a job interview or a social gathering.
If you're nervous, your energy will infiltrate the room and everyone will notice. If you are furious, you can quickly turn people off because they detect your negative vibe. Even if you try to hide it, you will be emitting energy waves that cannot be hidden.
People catch up on your energy, which is one way they form an opinion about you. And, whether they realise it or not, most people are really excellent at picking up on this. As a result, it is essential that you go into any interaction with the appropriate intention.
So, what is the proper intent?
The most effective method to approach every interaction and achieve maximum success is with ENTHUSIASM. This entails making a conscious decision to feel enthusiastic rather than anxious.
You may make a conscious choice to be happy, just as you can make a conscious choice to be passionate. We have far more influence over our emotions and energies than you may believe!
What is the benefit of entering an interaction with enthusiasm? People will perceive you as open and positive, and they will respond positively to you. When you lead with worried and anxious energy, on the other hand, you tend to lock yourself off to others.
A suggestion for you: Make a deliberate decision to be excited. As a result, your body language will automatically reflect that mood. You'll emit a cheerful, welcoming, and warm energy that will pull people to you and help them regard you favorably.
You may even try snapping your fingers to "snap" yourself out of your nervousness. This helps to disperse nervous energy and allows you to focuses on being more enthused.
Exercise is another technique to burn off nervous energy and foster a more relaxed but enthusiastic attitude. Try going for a ten-minute walk or jog before a big event – or even doing a few jumping jacks.
