Myth: I can't help someone who is suffering from a mental health problem.

Friends and loved ones can make a significant difference. Only 20% of adults received any mental health treatment in the previous year in 2020, with 10% receiving professional counselling or therapy. Friends and family can play an essential role in supporting someone in receiving the treatment and assistance they require by:

  • Reaching out and informing them that you are willing to help them.
  • Helping them in gaining access to mental health care.
  • Learning and sharing mental health information, especially if you hear anything that isn't true.
  • Treating them with the same dignity as you would anyone else.
  • Instead of defining someone by their diagnosis or using labels like "mad," use person-first language.
